How to Change a Habit Around Food

Have you ever tried to change a habit? If so, did you succeed?

Habits can be difficult to change, but it’s not impossible!

The reason for this is that we have trained our brains to do certain things. Each time you do something, such as eating ice cream after dinner, you are training your brain to expect that ice cream. It’s like a reward for the brain.

If you try and stop that habit, chances are you will be met with the desire to eat the ice cream after dinner. Your brain will remind you that it’s time to eat ice cream over and over. That’s when you know you’ve created a habit.

The good news is that we are able to change habits.

It takes some work and time but it can be done.

The way to do this is to begin to observe the thoughts you having about the ice cream. Expect that you will have an urge to eat the ice cream and remind yourself that everything is fine. It will pass. Just let it.

Urges can feel like the object (ice cream) needs immediate attention. But that doesn’t mean you have to react it to it by giving in.

Instead of using willpower to resist urge, or reacting by just giving in to the urge, just expect it and even welcome it.

This is where your power comes back. Where you have the power not the food.

So next time you notice an urge to eat something that you are trying not to eat, try to allow the urge to be there without reacting to it. Observe it curiosity. “That’s interesting. I’m wondering why I’m having an urge now”.

It’s very normal for this to happen. The urge will pass if you let it.

It’s not an easy thing to do but it can be done!
